Why WCI?
Student Life

Western Culinary Institute's main campus sits right in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon, adjacent to shops, restaurants, galleries, green spaces, and more—providing a terrific place to learn and live. Most WCI students live near the campus.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Oregon coast to the west offer numerous recreational opportunities.

WCI encourages students to participate in a variety of school activities to help develop leadership qualities and confidence. Among these are the American Culinary Federation Pacific Northwest Chapter and an array of student clubs, designed to help members enhance their culinary knowledge and explore specific avenues in the industry.

Our Campus

Western Culinary Institute occupies over 50,000 square feet that comprises the campus.

WCI moved into its new main-campus facility, the historic downtown Galleria Building, in October 2003.

Within the campus are nine lecture classrooms with audio-visual equipment, 9 kitchen classrooms, a student lounge, a library/resource center, and three computer labs.

Kitchens are equipped with stoves, ovens, and food-preparation equipment found in the industry. A wide range of small wares enable students to practice essential culinary skills and techniques. Industry-standard food-storage facilities further support the school's culinary program areas.

Our full-service restaurant, Bleu, and our espresso café, Café Bleu, are open to the public and generally staffed by students. Here, students are able to put their WCI culinary training into practice, and customers are delighted with the professionalism that students display.

Student Clubs

The Western Culinary Institute campus is alive with student activity! Not only do students spend time in the kitchen and classroom as part of the curriculum, but many participate for fun in our on-campus clubs.

WCI clubs are a great way to learn more about a specific skill and meet students from all three programs. Clubs also enable students the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and explore a side of the culinary or hospitality industry they may wish to pursue in their career.

Most of the clubs on campus were started by students with the help of a supervising instructor.

Current WCI clubs include the Catering Club; the Brew Club; the Baking Club; the Cake Decorating Club; the Charcuterie Club; and the Farm to Table Club. Click here to see more details about current clubs.
